Everything you need to know to support pregnant patients in practice
Everything you need to know to support pregnant patients in practice
There isn’t an area of medicine where Naturopathic Doctors work more closely with other health professionals than pregnancy.

Your treatment plans are landing in the offices of Midwives, Obstetricians and Family Doctors.

How does that make you feel?

Pregnancy is a unique area of medicine that requires exceptional understanding of safe prescribing and risk reduction by all care team members.

If you’re going to work this closely with other health professionals, you need the confidence on how to manage the complex pregnant patient with evidence informed protocols and strategies.

It’s imperative as a Naturopathic Doctor and part of your patients’ care team that you:
  • Know what's safe to prescribe in pregnancy
  • Keep up to date on the current research in pregnancy, prevention of adverse risks in pregnancy and standard of care guidelines
  • Know effective treatment strategies for use in pregnancy

We all love treating the uncomplicated, happy, pregnant patient!

But what happens when they have symptoms?
How do you reduce the risk of complications?
How are you going to support your patient when things go wrong?
Staying up to date on the research is time-consuming
  • What is the current evidence on GBS?
  • What are the risk reduction strategies for conditions such as placental abruption and premature rupture of membranes?
  • How do you identify and modify risks for hypertensive disorders and preeclampsia?
  • What is the research on twin pregnancy?
If you’ve ever been lost in Pubmed, message boards or sifting through old presentation slides, you know how overwhelming it can be to choose the “right” answer for your pregnant patients.

The stakes are high and missing something feels like it’s not an option. It’s hard to feel confident without guidance and support.
Knowledge of the Standards of Care Guidelines is essential
Relying on outdated interaction databases to tell you which prescriptions are safe in pregnancy is risky.

Relying on old wives tales for treating pregnancy is also risky.

Giving nettle infusions instead of an appropriate dose of iron could put a patient at risk of perinatal depression and postpartum hemorrhage. Not following up with appropriate testing can be equally as detrimental.

Standard of Care Guidelines are held in high regard due to the level of evidence behind them. Knowledge of current standards in care can help you in your clinical decision making and charting for informed consent purposes. Keeping your patients and your license safe!
There is more to it than just treating the common prenatal conditions
Not every patient will fit into the same bucket.

With 1 in 10 women struggling with PCOS and another 1 in 10 suffering from endometriosis, you will see high risk pregnancies in your practice. With 1 in 6 couples struggling with fertility challenges, IVF conceptions are prevalent and also come with higher prenatal risks.

Having the knowledge and confidence to know which patients to assess more closely or where to implement additional screening and preventative treatments to support a healthy birth is important.

Integrative Practitioners have a big role to play in
supporting prenatal patients through healthy pregnancies.

We need to be equipped with more than just the basics.

When I first conceived unexpectedly (on my IUD!), I found out at my first prenatal appointment that I was in sudden renal failure. I went from anticipating an uneventful home birth to high risk obstetric care.
I had a lot of questions on how to best support my pregnancy and neither my obstetric team or my complementary care providers had the answers I was looking for.
As a Naturopathic Doctor and now patient, I witnessed firsthand the gaps in prenatal care.

It was frustrating not having ND care plans accepted or considered safe by other health care practitioners. As a patient in a high risk obstetric clinic, I felt I was being singled out as a Naturopathic Doctor. My care team blamed my “Naturopathic Remedies” for my high risk condition. I felt like I spent my entire pregnancy defending the evidence for integrative perinatal care.

But through that very difficult time, I also came to understand that we don’t have the same Standards of Care in naturopathic medicine to hold us accountable to best evidence.

Coming out of that personal experience, I wanted to deeply understand the research and develop evidence-based standards to support everything I prescribed so that the entire prenatal team could feel confident in their patients’ safety and wellbeing.
For the last decade, this area of medicine has become my passion and almost 100% of my patient base. I’ve had the opportunity to build collaborative relationships with prenatal health professionals and obstetricians and continue to work towards a more collaborative healthcare model.
We have a lot of strategies in our scope as NDs that can support positive pregnancy outcomes. We are in the perfect position to guide patients through evidence-informed nutrition and lifestyle interventions for optimal pregnancy outcomes - when no one else on the care team discusses these important topics! I wanted to be able to use this research to collaborate with all obstetric registered health care providers using evidence-based treatment plans.

Pregnancy is a unique area of medicine that requires exceptional
understanding of safe prescribing and risk reduction by all care team members.Having the knowledge and understanding of the current Standard of Care Guidelines and what the current research reflects ensures that our patients’ health is supported and our licences are protected.

Our patients put their trust in us and rely on us to know the most current and evidence-based information to guide them.

Feeling like a trusted resource to pregnant patients & other care providers
