THE EATING BEHAVIOUR WORKSHOP

From The DSM To Diet Culture

Disordered Eating Behaviour.

Do you know how to Identify it?

As a Clinician:

  • You know your patients struggle with their eating behaviour issues and yo-yo dieting but you aren't sure how to support them.
  • You want your patients to achieve real change but often watch them fall back to old habits.
  • Your training on nutrition focused on restriction and elimination but you know this isn't the path forward.

If the underlying issue of eating behaviour concerns aren’t addressed, it can be difficult to help patients to move forward in their overall health goals.

Making sustainable changes to eating behaviour can be difficult for many patients.

As clinicians, we’re aware of the health benefits of improving the nutritional intake of our patients, but how can you help to positively change eating behaviour over the long term? Patients will often begin a nutritional treatment plan motivated, but may quickly go back to old patterns, feeling like they don’t have enough willpower or motivation to change.

It can be difficult to know where to start when patients struggle with their eating.

How can you help them without adding to the issue?
We know that diets aren’t a sustainable answer, and that less than 20% of those who diet end up maintaining any weight loss.

Training in addressing eating behaviour is lacking in healthcare education.

You want to use an evidence-based approach, but don’t feel equipped to do this on your own.

You don't have to struggle alone.
There are evidence-based approaches that can help patients to address overeating, binge eating and emotional eating that you can plug into your practice right away.

I'M DR. SYLVI MARTIN, NATUROPATHIC DOCTOR, & REGISTERED NURSE PSYCHOTHERAPIST

I firmly believe that life is too short to feel guilty about body size, weight, or what you eat.

I'm also on a mission to help clinicians be free of weight bias and stigma and give clinicians real resources to use in their practice to support their patient's eating behaviour.

While working with individuals in my naturopathic practice over the past twelve years, I noticed the same themes showing up over and over.

The primary emotion patients felt around food was guilt.

Patients felt if they only had more willpower, their nutrition would be easier.

Patients felt shame about their bodies.

Patients felt guilt about food that weren't "healthy"

People were secretly struggling with binge eating, overeating and yo-yo dieting.

I knew there had to be a better way to move individuals towards improving their eating behaviour.

I pursued training in two evidence-based approaches: mindfulness-based eating awareness training (MB-EAT) and intuitive eating. I also went on to complete RN psychotherapy training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Eating Disorders (CBT-E). These approaches have been instrumental in my practice to help individuals heal their relationship with food and their bodies.

My goal is to support you to improve your ability to assess your patients for eating behaviour issues with competence, so you can provide high quality evidence-informed eating behaviour care. We can help people make peace with food so they’re in a better position to pursue their health goals.

Imagine if you felt more confident assessing and supporting your patients with their eating behaviour concerns

You would feel more confident helping patients get to their underlying food-related issues that are holding them back.

You would be able to tackle your patient's emotional eating head on rather than avoiding the conversation entirely.

You would be more successful treating your patients and creating lifelong sustainable change.

You can feel confident in your approach to addressing eating behaviour issues by:

Understanding how to effectively engage your patients.

Improving your collaboration with other healthcare providers.

Reducing weight bias internalization in your patients.

Clinician Feedback

“Our profession has a long history of prescribing restriction and elimination through nutrition when the research has never been in favour of this approach. It took me over a decade of un-learning and experimenting in my own practice to gain the confidence that clinicians will achieve in this one day workshop. If you're avoiding talking about disordered eating and are still prescribing elimination diets - this workshop will lead you down the path towards a more evidence based approach with your patients."

 -Dr. Jordan Robertson, ND

“Sylvi serves up a robust main course of evidence-based approaches to intuitive eating and eating behaviour. As a Naturopathic Doctor, Registered Nurse Psychotherapist, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and Mindfulness-Based Eating Facilitator, Sylvi has all the ingredients to "stir-the-pot" and chart new recipes for a more flexible, intuitive and sustainable approach to eating behaviour.

Sylvi will invite you to reflect on how current messaging surrounding eating, food, and body size are doing more harm than good. In a non-judgmental and fully digestible way, she will fully support you with the concepts and clinical skills to have confident conversations about food and body size with your patients. This is all served up with Sylvie’s signature ingredients: a heaping tablespoon of humour, a dash of wit, and a generous cup of fun. Her courses really are food for the confident clinician’s soul."
