Comprehensive Postpartum Management and Evidence Based Lactation Support Intensive

The guidelines on postpartum management have changed, but the way you are delivering that care has not.

Treating postpartum patients is like treating your regular patients but with your hands tied behind your back.

  • They are sleep deprived, but stay up late on their phone, just to have some time for themselves.
  • Their labs often come back normal but they aren’t feeling like themselves
  • Your prescription options are more limited, and “everything” seems to be contraindicated with lactation
  • There is no consistency with when they come back, and they often cancel their appointments

The obstacles to treating this population are real. And what’s worse, when they finally do ask for help, they’re brushed off because it’s “normal” to feel this way postpartum.

Your patients shouldn’t have to choose between having their health and being a mom.

How do we help them have both?

There is a huge gap in treating postpartum patients that we are perfectly positioned to fill but currently aren’t….

One 6 week followup is not good enough

You get your patients pregnant, help them have the healthiest pregnancy possible, then they have their baby and never come back to see you, or only come back for their 6 week check up.

Your postpartum program is not reaching its fullest potential.

You know you could do more to help, but you’re not sure where to start.

Extensive, overwhelming treatment plans lead to overwhelmed patients.
And we know that getting your patients to even take a prenatal vitamin at this phase is a challenge!

You need a strategy. Fast.

You have to be an expert at many things at once:

  • what’s a normal vs. pathological postpartum experience
  • safety in lactation and how to treat breastfeeding specific concerns
  • Stay on top of treating all your typical conditions that can be aggravated or return postpartum

It’s a lot.

And the cherry on top? Navigating the research and trying to discern what it actually means.

Naturopathic Doctors should be the leaders in postpartum care. We excel at managing short term goals, while working on long term prevention. We have the time to spend with our patients, and can provide the comprehensive care these women need
(and the guidelines actually recommend!)

The answer to this problem is us!

I’m Laura Jasmin, a Naturopathic Doctor with a special clinical focus in postpartum and lactation. Most people choose a specialty because they have a personal experience that led them to their career choice. My story is the opposite. I chose my career path, then came the struggle. I followed my passion from the start and while completing my Naturopathic Medical Degree I also completed the International Breastfeeding Centre’s Lactation Medicine Programme.

I worked tirelessly to complete all 101 hours in the Lactation Education Program,

and as I worked through both programs, I immediately started to see the gaps in postpartum care.

Patients were not being followed up with when they were supposed to. Some were driving more than 4 hours with a newborn just to find a clinic that could help them. And they weren’t just struggling with lactation, but also sleep, mood, fatigue, nutrition, weight retention, hypertension, the list was endless. So while I sat there focused on the lactation piece, I knew we could do so much more for these patients. I thought if only I could combine both of my internships into one practice, and start to create a community of evidence based practitioners who are trained in both, we could raise the standard of care postpartum. I knew I was onto something because before I could even open the doors to my physical location, I saw my first patient, for an in-home lactation visit and never looked back.

Fast forward to my own postpartum experience at the onset of the pandemic, pivoting my small business, with my partner as an essential worker, no help, and now having 2 kids under 2. I began to see myself in all of my patients. Exhausted, sleep deprived, skipping meals, not exercising, struggling with my mood, difficulty losing weight. No one followed up with me, no one asked me about my mood, or if I had eaten, or if I slept more than 3 hours, and no one cared. At first I wanted to give up, if I knew so much about this topic, but couldn’t even execute it myself, how could I expect my patients to?

Instead, I became the practitioner that I needed. I had to care, because no one else was doing it. But I couldn’t do it alone. Being told “that’s just what it’s like being a mom” is B.S. The research tells us what we need to do here, we’re just not doing it. It’s time to change the narrative around postpartum care, and we need YOU!

Imagine if you knew exactly what to do for your postpartum patients, your treatment plans felt easy, and with each visit they actually got better.

Imagine knowing exactly WHEN you need to see your postpartum patients.
[HINT: it’s more often than you think.]

And feeling confident you are giving the best quality of care to your postpartum patients.

Imagine knowing exactly which labwork to run and when.
Do they have low milk supply?
Did they have gestational diabetes?

Each requires a different monitoring process that we will hand to you.

Imagine your patients returning when they’re supposed to, excelling at their treatment plan.

Better patients are lifelong patients. You can’t afford to do this wrong.

INTRODUCING:

The Advanced practice training:

Comprehensive Postpartum Management and Evidence Based Lactation Support

We are putting aside our biases, and talking about what the EVIDENCE actually says about how to support people postpartum. This is everything I wish I knew when I was starting out.

WHAT'S INSIDE

 Comprehensive Postpartum Management

Module 1 & 2 - Postpartum Patient Management

We will review guidelines of when to see your postpartum patients, and what needs to be addressed at each visit.

You will create:

  • We will give you the exact timing of when you should see your postpartum patients, so you can create a timeline of when you will see your patients, with confidence!
  • We will give you a list of what to cover at EACH of the visits, that you can implement into your EMR and use in practice on Monday!

Module 3 - Postpartum Bloodwork

There is a huge gap in postpartum care, where we often don’t even follow the public health recommendations for which labs to do postpartum. Want to feel confident in what you should be testing or advocating for based on the current research?

You will learn:

  • When to run blood work postpartum, and how often.
  • We will give you a list of the labwork to run depending on their pregnancy and postpartum experience. This is not the same for everyone. By the end of the course you will feel confident in which labs should be run and when.

Module 4 & 5 - Postpartum Supplements, Nutrition, & Exercise

In this section we’ll cover nutritional needs postpartum, what the guidelines are around exercise, and what supplements actually have evidence to back them up.

You will learn:

  • The exact dose and timing of supplements to support your patients postpartum.
  • If you’ve ever been confused about which adaptogen you should use (or maybe shouldn’t use) postpartum, this section is for you!
  • What their exact nutritional needs are postpartum & if they’re lactating.
  • How to help your patient manage their weight postpartum.
  • How to prescribe exercise in a postpartum population.

Module 6 - Hormone Therapy During Lactation

We will go through the evidence on estrogen and progesterone use in the postpartum patient and how it impacts lactation.

You will learn:

  • How to choose a contraception postpartum.
  • Which contraceptives are safe with lactation.

 Evidence Based Lactation Support

Module 7 & 8- Lactation Basics: The Latch and Feeding Management

What assessment tools are used here, and how can we support them right from the beginning? What is our role as naturopathic doctors in this process? This section is all about how to manage your lactation patients.

You will learn:

  • How to take the case for a lactating parent/baby dyad.
  • Who will struggle with lactation, and how to identify those patients early.
  • Everything you need to know about “the latch”

Module 9 - Common Conditions

It is common for lactating patients to come to naturopathic doctors for solutions for breastfeeding challenges: recurrent mastitis, low milk supply, and looking for a recommendation. What role do we have to play, and feeling confident about what we can do.

You will learn:

  • What bloodwork to consider if difficulties with lactation (low milk supply).
  • What the difference is between mastitis, blocked ducts, vasospasm and candida.
  • What the evidence says about tongue ties & revisions.

Module 10 - Lactation Nutrition

Bias, bias, and more bias! If you want to start a fight, start talking about nutrition and lactation, and stand back.

You will learn:

  • What the nutritional needs are of a lactating person.
  • If your patient has to give up certain foods: alcohol, coffee, dairy, spicy foods, because they are lactating
  • How to support your patient with postpartum weight management during lactation.

Module 11 - Safety of Prescribing in Lactation

The number one question I get asked is “is this safe in lactation”? Followed by “What nipple cream should I use?” “What galactagogue is the best?” In this section, we’re sharing it all.

You will learn:

  • How all the nipple creams stack against one another and which one you should recommend.
  • How to support someone with low milk supply with galactagogues. You will learn what the evidence says about dose, how quickly they work, and what to expect with their use
  • All about domperidone, and if the controversy is true, or what does the research actually say?
  • How to determine if a drug or supplement is safe during lactation.
  • We will give you databases and the resources we use to help make evidence informed decisions about ANY drug or supplement.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:

How to safely prescribe in lactation

When to see your patients postpartum, how often, and what to do at each visit.

What bloodwork to run postpartum, and when

Myth busting: Lactation and Nutrition, what does the evidence say?

TESTIMONIALS

The Postpartum Management and Evidence-Based Lactation Support course was chock full of robust conversation around various topics impacting this population. I appreciated how Dr. Jasmin highlighted popular outdated therapies in addition to current best practices. Most of all, as is true across the board at the Confident Clinician, I loved how this course asked me to think critically about my boundaries as a provider: if there's not the evidence we desire for an intervention, am I comfortable prescribing it? Turns out, I'm not - and it's great to feel clear about that!

- Dr. Tiffany Bloomingdale, ND

"Dr. Laura Jasmin, ND is such a great educator. She is extremely knowledgeable and able to communicate clearly and succinctly when teaching others. She is very approachable and kind while still being confident and evidence guided. I took so much away from her postpartum talk at the OAND Convention that I was able to immediately integrate into my practice. "

- Dr. Jessica Petrusma, ND

"Dr. Laura Jasmin, ND has a comprehensive understanding of the research on postpartum and lactation support. Her passion for this area of medicine is apparent in the way she presents and her commitment to changing the landscape of postpartum care is inspiring. Every time I hear Dr. Laura speak, I learn new practical tools and information that I can easily implement into my patient care plans."

- Dr. Carly King, ND

I am on a mission to provide exceptional postpartum care that changes these women’s lives and I can’t do it myself.

FAQ

What if I don’t have a specific postpartum focus in my practice?
If you treat people who have given birth, you treat postpartum patients. No matter if your patient gave birth 3 years ago or 30, their postpartum experience still impacts their screening process and labwork that should be completed annually.
I don’t see patients who are lactating in my clinic.
Whether this is an area you practice in or not, even if you manage mostly digestive concerns, you will have patients seek out your expertise while they are lactating. Even if you only ever see one lactating patient in clinic, this course will still pay for itself.
Is this course approved for continuing education credits?
This course has been approved for 12 Category C credits through the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia (CNPBC) and 12 Category A credits with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CONO).
What is your refund policy?
We don't offer refunds for our digital products. Once you have access to the course dashboard you have instant access to all of my knowledge and resources on this topic. No going back!
