Mediterranean Diet Workshop

Implementing nutrition into an evidence-based practice

Evidence update and practical tools

Are you okay with giving nutrition recommendations without context, a plan, or the support your patient needs to be successful?

You believe that food is medicine, but don’t know how to support your patients to transform their nutrition

How do you inspire change without making people MORE stressed out about what they’re eating (or not eating)

You feel unsure about the evidence, so your emphasis on nutrition ends up being lukewarm or left to chance

We have a chance to deeply impact a patient's nutrition, but as a profession, we’ve created more confusion than clarity.

Does nutrition feel like an uphill climb where you continuously myth-bust the latest fad diet?

  • As clinicians, we’re not immune to the constant influx of nutrition information. Is paleo the right answer? Should your patients be avoiding nightshades? It can feel like a race against time to figure out what’s true, what isn’t and what works. And how to answer your patient questions with confidence and clarity.

Have you cobbled together multiple links, handouts and recipe books, but still feel like there’s a missing piece in putting theory into practice?

  • Recipe books and shopping lists look pretty, but are totally inadequate when it comes to creating real behaviour change in your patients.

Do you get blank stares from patients when you hand them nutrition handouts?

  • It can feel defeating for both patient and practitioner to implement nutrition if you don't know where you're going or how to measure progress

Did your nutrition education even mention research?
Does your delivery method feel completely outdated?

  •  Your patients are following all sorts of self prescribed diets. They have 100s of questions about the latest social media nutrition trends. Your training has not equipped you to talk about nutrition effectively.

I had no idea that getting into the kitchen with my Patients would fundamentally change how I taught, talked and thought about nutrition.

I felt very out of place amongst my classmates on the topic of nutrition during my naturopathic training. I almost accepted a position in culinary school instead of naturopathic school. Good food was core to my person. But, in naturopathic school the focus was on “bad” foods, cleanses, and elimination of what people shouldn’t eat. For the most part,

I kept quiet about my apprehensions, put my head down and invested in my culinary skills. It helped me manage my school stress too!

After graduation, I was eager to incorporate nutrition into my practice. But after many conversations about food, I realized the following trends:
  • People were scared to follow my recommendations because it violated some food rule they had just read about from the latest celebrity doctor
  • People didn’t have the cooking skills to make the recipe or plan simple meals
  •  People were paralyzed by the fear of doing it wrong
And I felt a constant knot in my stomach that maybe I had it all wrong. Maybe legumes were the worst. And bullet coffee was the next miracle elixir.

The stakes felt so high! Yet, I knew that food could be enjoyable, pleasurable and actually fun. I became determined to cut through the noise and start to change the narrative around the current nutrition conversation. Away from fear and restriction to something exciting and tasty.

So I took a leap and studied the Mediterranean Diet in depth. As a doctor, as a cook, and as an eater.

Dr. Antonella Aguilera-Ruiz, ND

This became the backbone of my signature series called Dr and the Chef where I took nutrition education out of the office and into the kitchen.

I logged many hours compiling the evidence for the Mediterranean diet across medical diagnoses. And the research was outstanding and clear: The Med Diet was clearly a healthy eating pattern. Yet, we did not spend a single minute on it in school.

To be honest, my blood boiled. Here we are playing whack-a-mole with fad diets while we have an incredible body of research and intervention trials on the Mediterranean diet.  Why is no one is naming the elephant in the room?

AND, this way of eating is delicious, celebratory and can travel with someone for the longevity of their life?

I know as a profession we can raise the bar on our nutritional research and delivery of care.

We can move the needle in having constructive conversations that allow people to support their health and eat well.

What if you could guide your patients through one of the healthiest eating patterns easily and effectively?

What If You felt confident fielding their questions WITHOUT

Wasted Time

The methodology section of studies has some real gems that can transform your clinical practice. The “how” in this case is as important as the “what.” You could spend tons of hours reading them and dissecting the roadmap that gets people results.

Luckily, you won’t have to.
I've read them for you.

Wasted Money

Food is a HUGE topic. Quite often the missing part of the conversation is how a doctor actually implements research into their treatment plans.

What system works? More CE isn’t always the answer. We need to transform your knowledge into practical skills to up level yourself and your patients.

Frustration Etc.

It can be hard to navigate conversations around food if you feel unsure of the promise or peril of your recommendations. Being good at nutrition means staying up to date about the role nutrition plays in your patient’s overall strategy.

We have the time in our patient visits to have important conversations around nutrition compared to our conventional counterparts. But, what if that conversation was grounded in solid evidence and also created an easy to follow stepwise plan forward?

Familiarity Breeds Comfort

Not everyone reads cookbooks like novels. But, being well versed in the Mediterranean Diet requires knowing how all the pieces work together. You being adaptable allows you to transfer this skill set to your patients too. First, though, you need a good in depth tutorial.

Patterns over Perfection

What is pretty clear from the data is that there is no single “perfect“ diet. We’re talking about patterns that can be quite achievable if framed correctly.

Separate the Wheat From the Shaft

Nutrition is a muddled conversation because it often blends opinion, with plausibility and also has major economic and social factors. You’ll leave feeling confident in the evidence we have, what we don’t have and how to bridge the different roles food plays in our lives.

TESTIMONIALS

With every topic we've covered over the last 2 years, nutritionally we circle back to the same concept in every presentation. Patients who eat a Mediterranean diet have better health outcomes, disease reduction and improved symptomology. Dr. Antonella Aguilera Ruiz, ND combines her love of food, community and olive oil with the research on Mediterranean diet outcomes to beautifully support practitioners who want to better educate their patients while instilling a love for cooking and food.

This practical workshop will reconnect you to one of the reasons you chose Naturopathic care, and will show you how to support your patients with the Med diet in a way that improves health outcomes. I can't think of someone better than Antonella to help us rediscover our love of food and nutritional science.

FAQ

What if my focus isn’t mental health?
While we will do a review of the evidence for diet and mental health, the roadmap to teaching this pattern of eating has a common pattern regardless of diagnosis. We’ll also compare and contrast across specific diets like the PREDIMED, MIND diet and those used in pregnancy, PCOS and arthritis, so you know how to plug and play regardless of condition.
